Tame frizzy hair without silicones
Rain, hail or shine. Frizzy hair can become a frustrating battle for those with dry, damaged or curly hair, even folk with straight hair can have unexpected frizzy hair days. Today we look at the causes of frizzy hair and offer some ideas on how you may be able to control your frizz, without the need for silicones.
Silicones, frequently found in frizz taming hair products are a group of ingredients that coat your hair to tame flyways and provide lustre and shine. While they do lock out frizz causing humidity, they easily build up, preventing more nourishing ingredients from penetrating the hair and scalp. If you are prone to dandruff, it may be thanks to the buildup of these silicones as they can clog the pores of your scalp, making it feel itchy and even flaky. Silicone build-up can unfortunately also result in slick, oily looking hair.
Whether the frizz is a personal hair characteristic, due to over styling, or an environmental or lifestyle factor, frizzy hair doesn’t need to be a daily challenge. With a few new ideas and routine adjustments, nourished, silky hair can be possible, without the need for nasty chemicals.
Daily hair care practices such as brushing, towel drying, tying up with an elastic, can tug, stretch or split the hair strand, effecting its structure, resulting in weakness and even breakages. Mindfully adopting gentler hair care practices, such as using a wide tooth comb, drip drying, or a tying with a loose plait in lieu of a tight ponytail, may help maintain healthier, stronger hair.
Heated styling tools, such as a straightener, curling iron or blow dryer will inevitably burn the hair shaft, leaving it brittle and more prone to frizz. Trying to reduce the frequency of use, or if you do need to use a styling tool, trying a lower setting may reduce the chance of burnt hair and therefore dry, split ends.
Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can also cause friction, stretching your hair as well as striping the hair of its natural oils. Switch to silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction and maintain smoother hair overnight.
Using the wrong products including shampoo, conditioner or styling products loaded with chemicals or choosing products designed for a different hair type can also cause frizz. Chemicals such as ethanol-based alcohols, sls/sles’s and sulfates strip the hair of its natural oils and effect the natural balance of hydration within the scalp and hair. Choose products that contain natural ingredients such as ghassoul clay, argan oil, lavender oil, calendula oil and even oatmeal to gently cleanse your hair whilst maintaining balance. Free from harsh chemicals or soaps, Naturopath formulated NueBar is formulated by a Naturopath, using ingredients to suit the needs of your specific hair type.
Harsh chemicals such as bleach, hair colour or straightening solutions can also strip away the hair’s natural oils. These natural oils give the hair a shiny, natural lustre and help to keep the hair shaft strong and healthy. Deep conditioning your hair, using the co-wash method, can help provide extra nourishment to the hair shaft, without stripping the natural oils unnecessarily, as regular shampooing can sometimes do. Choose a conditioner rich in plant-based oils such as the NueBar Super Rich Conditioner, formulated with organic olive oil, rapeseed oil, cocoa butter and argan oil to work with your natural oils, restoring balance and shine.
Over washing your hair can also strip the shaft of the natural oils which keep it naturally hydrated. Instead aim to wash your hair 2-3 times a week. Or adopt the co-wash method (conditioner only washing) every other wash, to nourish, rather than strip the hair’s natural oils. You can read more about co-washing here.
Humidity can make your hair frizzier as the hair comes into contact with water molecules more often, causing the hair shaft to swell and lift the cuticles. This results in a wavier or curlier hair strand. As humidity is not easily avoided, using a nourishing leave in conditioner, with rapeseed, olive and argan oil such as NueBar Super Rich conditioner can help protect the hair shaft, locking moisture in without the need for man-made silicones. Simply wet the bar, lather onto your hands and apply as you would any normal leave-in conditioner. A little bit goes a long way with this super concentrated bar.
Split ends are a key contributor to frizz, so regular trims (every 6-8 weeks) are essential to keep your hair healthy and reduce frizz.
Formulated by a Naturopath, Award Winning NueBar has been designed to work with the hairs natural oils to ensure a healthy and nourished scalp and hair. With a range available for sensitive folk as well as curly hair, oily hair and normal hair, you can rest assured that these concentrated bars of goodness are made with the best of intentions, for your wellbeing and the wellbeing of the planet.

This product is amazing. My hair is in great condition and less frizzy. I walked 800km on the Camino de Santiago and was worried how to look after my thick, curly hair and frizz. Travelling very light is the key to this hike. Initially getting used to no lather, my hair felt amazing and looked amazing.’ ~ Kaye, via TrustPilot

I am very happy to have found Nue Bar.
I have a lot of hair but it’s very fine and curly. Most shampoos I’ve used (even those that say they are for fine curly hair) leave my hair dry and frizzy. Nue Bar is perfect for my hair.’ ~ Natalie
